James Mubiru--Millions Starving in Africa

July 16, 2022

Food crisis is soaring across Africa and millions
of families are going hungry and children dying
of malnutrition. If and when we go hungry in the West,
we cannot expect sympathy if we continue to ignore this.

According to recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the African Union (AU), it is estimated that 346 Million people living in Africa are greatly affected by the ongoing food crisis. Countries affected by the food insecurity conditions include Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, DRC, Central African Republican, Chad, Nigeria, Burkina Faso among others.

Conflict, droughts, a dramatic rise in displaced people, surging fuel and food prices and the adverse economic effects of the Covid-19 scamdemic and Russia-Ukrainian war have led to food insecurity crisis.

hand.jpgAccording to a World Vision report, one in five people living in Africa faced hunger in year 2020. Also it is estimated that 282 Million people were experiencing hunger, more than double the proportion of any other region in the world.

Edgar Sandoval Jr. (CEO of World Vision U.S) said, "It is heartbreaking that the lives of millions of children in East Africa are at risk due to a perfect storm of conflict, changing or unpredictable weather patterns and the aftershocks of covid-19...The long-term of harm of malnutrition on children's development hinders their ability to achieve their God-given potential."

Here in my homeland, Uganda, the Karamoja region is very much affected. More than 91,000 children are suffering from acute malnutrition. Also more than 500,000 people are going hungry in Karamoja region. This is approximately 40 percent of the population of this rural region between South Sudan and Kenya.

Dr. Sharif Nabile, the district health officer in Kaabong, one of Karamoja's worst hit districts, said, "In three months we have lost more than 25 children under five due to malnutrition...but there are very who die and are not reported in the communities."

According to the latest assessment by humanitarian agencies in Karamoja region, it is reported that about 91,600 children and 9,500 pregnant or breastfeeding women are suffering from acute malnutrition and need treatment.

Alex Mokori, a nutrition specialist from UNICEF which is screening for malnutrition in Karamoja region with local authorities said, "In terms of acute malnutrition...this year we have experienced the worst that we have had in the last 10 years."

Mr. Munir Safieldin, the UNICEF representative to Uganda recently said,"The lives of thousands of children are at stake. Acute malnutrition can be treated and prevented but we need urgent action and support. We must not wait for thousands of children to die.We have said never again too many times. We need long-term and predictable funding to help these children and their families."

It is really a very alarming situation according to the above reports and I am very thankful for Mr. Henry Makow's tireless efforts in seeing that people around the world wake up and get to know the true people behind all these sufferings.

africa8.jpgAlso I am very thankful for the readers of this website who contributed for my family's welfare. It is good news that I am able to put some bread on the table for my family to feed on unlike in the past when we were going through much suffering and in many cases going without food for days.

I am currently prayerfully working on securing a small plot for the house construction for the permanent settlement of my family as monthly rent costs are increasing and becoming costly for us.Our God of love will never forsake us during these dark times.

 God bless you all.

Most Canadians and Americans are oblivious to the existing rate of starvation in Third World countries in Africa and Asia, although starvation has been a huge problem for the last 10 or 20 years and longer. See Number of Deaths from Starvation in Asia - The Borgen Project
