From the late 1990's on, I remember telethons in Los Angeles, quite often aired on local KTLA or the regional PBS channel. I was generally lured by the promise of rock bands, and was often treated to performances by local (mostly Jewish) musicians who were simply superb. But this was just cheese to keep us watching. What I noted was that when the (always apparently Jewish) host asked for donations to Chabad, his/her whole demeanor would change. I recall "Chabad...Chabad, Chabad!" from a host with a lowered head looking furtively at the audience, like a Mel Brooks caricature of a Jew. Apparently that was all that was required. As the camera panned the audience, it looked like a Catholic Church when the collection boxes were passed down the pews. Men were pulling out their wallets and women their purses. I asked a Jewish relative (Catholics and Jews seems to gravitate) about Chabad, and he said I probably knew more than himself. But he remarked that when he was shook-down by business contacts (he was a stock broker) he knew better than to refuse. He could decline the various Holocaust survivor groups, or money for Israel, but Chabad was on a different level. That was explained to him as a young broker at a major Chicago firm, where he was told his future career might depend on how he handled Chabad.
