Police Just Doing their Job, says Dan

Here's my true story. When I was his age I made extra money evenings by hanging wall paper in people's homes. It's messy work, so I always wore old jeans and t-shirt. One night after finishing up about ten o'clock, I was loading my work tools in the trunk of my car`, when a cop flashed his lights. Two HUGE white cops came over and treated me like a criminal. One shined a flashlight in my face. The other one said "TURN AROUND AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON THE CAR". Instead of doing that, I said, "look man, I'm just finishing a job.."
I don't recall exactly how, but next thing I knew I was face down on the car with one hand holding the back of my neck, and the other hand squeezing my testicles. While they ran my driver's license they asked me specific questions to which I answered, "I can explain if you'll just listen.." The cop said, "DON'T TALK UNLESS I ASK YOU A QUESTION. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?"
Do you understand, Mr. Chilcott, when a cop doesn't know who you are and you're a suspect, the only words in your vocabulary need to be "Yes Sir" or "no sir". Talking back, and screaming pregnant girlfriends and resisting arrest only tends to escalates the situation.
Back to my story, the young white couple that I've just worked for came out to see what was going on, the woman said, "It okay officer" to which the cop replied, "STAY OUT OF IT." They stood there mortified, but frozen. After what seemed like forever - probably five minutes - the other cop said, "It's not the suspect. No priors."
Only then did the cop give me my wallet and say, "We've had several reports of a peeping Tom in this neighborhood looking through women's windows. You match a description we got from a couple that was jogging on this street a few hours ago. White or Hispanic male, dark hair, beard, jeans and white t-shirt."
Then he said. "You're free to go." The other cop said, "we're just doing our job." That was the closest thing to "sorry" I was going to get. It was enough. So I went home. The whole thing probably took about 20 minutes.
My heart was racing, I felt humiliated while it was going on, but I didn't take it personally. I understood that I just happened to match the description of a criminal they were looking for that night. IT HAPPENS. GET OVER IT. It's not about you.
Public schools in the US and Canada should be teaching students how to act when questioned by the police. They should also explain that it's not "because I'm black" or "because I'm queer" or whatever. It's because you may be in the wrong place at the wrong time and look suspicious. If you aren't who they're looking for they'll figure it out.

But if Canada is "hell for people of colour", then why does your family stay there? If you think Canada is too "racist" for you, there are many countries in this hemisphere alone where you'll feel right at home. Try Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Venezuela, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Colombia, Brazil.
Or if you prefer the benefits and economy of a 'diverse' nation like Canada. there are many cities in the United States where no white cops will persecute you. Try Detroit Michigan. Just over the Canadian border, an 80% black city, with a 63% black police force, black chief of police, black mayor and black city council. What more could you want?

Interesting take, and that exact situation happened to me leaving my house once, coming out of my garage 3 blinding flashlights in my face, and if it was a one time thing it wouldn't have bothered me. Happened several times in a year. It's insane, and it always the same excuse that they are looking for a suspect in a predominantly white upper class neighbourhood that so happens to looks exactly like me.
Once, twice, maybe even three times can be a mistake but more than six times in a short span of maybe 4 months is no coincidence. It's amazing how you try to speak up against an injustice done and how quickly it is discredited or you're told to "get over it." It was so bad that we had to seek legal action action. In the end, the best we got was that we would no longer be terrorized in or around our own home. Now things are much better and if anything, the neighbourhood feels much safer without police surveillance, even my neighbours feel a lot safer. Our neighbourhood is far from a bad one, with families made up of doctors, lawyers, nurses, business people and engineers. So it was a little off putting when you have a police officer driving through constantly.

As pointed out by Dan and Alex Chilcott the police are a special breed. Unfortunately, their behaviour has less to do with them having "a tough job to do" as the apologists like to say, and much more to do with their collective mindset. There is a reason why whenever you meet one cop you feel like you have met them all; that is because the police selection process is universal, and only those who rate a just-above-average IQ get in while the lower and high IQ group get washed out. In brief, they are not the sharpest tools in the shed, and this intentional. It is not a derogation of police as a general rule, it is simply a fact.
They do not possess the mental faculties to think outsider the box, so do not expect them to treat you as any sort of an equal or with any sort of fairness, it simply isn't in the DNA, and until the selection process is seriously upgraded we will only see things get gradually worse, as if their complete immunity against any sort of crimes they commit isn't enough we should only prepare for more of the same. Face it Officer Friendly died in the 60's, he is no longer a peace officer he is now a law enforcement officer. While he used to be a member of the community he is now a brute. I used to have great respect for police but their own behaviour has destroyed that and they have no one but themselves to blame for it.
The blue wall culture is self propagating, and while the so-called "good cops" are being supported by the ignorant they are all the while covering up for the criminal activities of their buddies out of fear of internal retribution.

It seems that the author just inserted Brazil in his text to make his list longer. Comparing Brazilian police to Cuba's? Gimme a break. Has he ever dealt with a Brazilian policeman?
Apart from the bad apples and eventual corruption, most are nice and approachable. Many are good Christians. You can actually talk to a policeman here. Sometimes even talk your way out of trouble. There is not this culture of crazy militarization, of behaving like Robocop.
Those ridiculous scenes with policemen dressed for combat with scary black armor to grab a child (think Elian Gonzales), the obvious exaggeration, like they are going to war, have seldom been seen in Brazil. This is a North American situation and it is indeed weird, scary and completely unnecessary. It is an instrument of control.
I will say more, it is a cultural trait, since every person in North America with some authority, a security guard, a traffic controller, even some stewardesses for Christ's sake, talks like a military. I call it drill sergeant complex. When they start calling you "Sir" and completely removing themselves from normal human interaction, you know there is trouble coming.
